🔐 1. Firefox – Primary Password Feature

✅ What is Primary Password?

• Firefox lets you set a Primary Password (previously called “Master Password”) to protect saved passwords, credit cards, and autofill data in the browser.
• It encrypts your stored credentials using this password.

🔓 Can it be bypassed?

• If you forget the primary password, there is no way to recover or reset it — you must delete all saved logins to create a new one.
• However, if someone has access to your system and is logged into your OS user account, they may be able to:
  • Read encrypted credential files from your Firefox profile directory.
  • Use memory forensics or Firefox vulnerabilities to extract data while Firefox is running and the vault is unlocked.

🔁 Recovery Options

• Firefox does not provide a password recovery tool.
• You can delete the primary password (and all saved logins) via:
  1. Open Firefox → Settings → Privacy & Security → Saved Logins
  2. Click the 3-dot menu → Remove All Logins
  3. You can then remove the primary password itself

🧭 2. Chrome – Equivalent Feature?

❌ No Native Primary Password:

• Chrome does not offer a Primary Password like Firefox.
• It relies on your OS-level authentication:
  • Windows: Passwords are protected using Windows Credential Manager
  • macOS: Uses Keychain Access
• Viewing saved passwords at chrome://settings/passwords requires OS login credentials (biometric/pin/password).

🔓 Can it be broken?

• If an attacker has local access to your system and your Windows/macOS account is unlocked, they can:
  • Open Chrome settings and view passwords.
  • Access password stores using scripts or tools.

🟦 3. Microsoft Edge – Primary Password?

❌ No Primary Password:

• Similar to Chrome, Edge relies on OS-level security to protect stored passwords.
• Edge uses:
  • Windows Hello (biometric/PIN)
  • Integration with Microsoft account sync
  • Viewing saved passwords requires authentication

• Use a hardware-encrypted password manager (e.g., Bitwarden, 1Password)
• Enable full disk encryption (BitLocker, FileVault)
• Never rely solely on browser password storage for sensitive credentials
