About the Protect PDF tool

Protect PDF adds a password to your document so that only people who know it can open it. The file is encrypted with AES-256, the strongest standard encryption supported by PDF readers such as Adobe Acrobat, Chrome, Edge, Firefox, macOS Preview and mobile apps. An AES-128 option is available for very old readers.

You can also set an owner password and restrict what readers may do once the file is open: prevent printing, copying text and images, or editing the document. Permissions are honoured by mainstream PDF readers; the open password itself is what really keeps strangers out, so choose one that is long and hard to guess.

Your file never leaves your device — it is processed in your browser. To do the encryption, the page downloads the open-source @cantoo/pdf-lib library from the jsDelivr CDN; only that program code is downloaded — your PDF and your password are never sent anywhere.

Frequently asked questions

Is it free?
Yes — Protect PDF is completely free and unlimited. There is no account, sign-up, watermark or credit card required.
Are my file and password uploaded?
No. Encryption happens entirely in your web browser. The page downloads an open-source PDF library from a public CDN to do the work, but your PDF and password never leave your device.
What is the difference between the open and owner passwords?
The open (user) password is required to view the document. The owner password unlocks full access and lets someone change the permissions. If you restrict permissions without setting an owner password, a random one is generated, so nobody can lift the restrictions later.
Can I recover a forgotten password?
No — strong encryption means a lost password cannot be recovered by us or anyone else. Keep a copy of your password (and of the unprotected original) somewhere safe.
Do the print and copy restrictions always work?
Mainstream readers such as Acrobat, Chrome and Preview respect them, but some third-party software ignores permissions. Use the open password for real confidentiality.
