OCR PDF

Turn scanned PDFs into searchable, copyable documents — or extract the text. Your file never leaves your device — it is processed in your browser.

Recognise text in a scanned PDF

Choose the document language, run OCR and download a searchable PDF or a .txt file.

How it works

1

Choose your PDF

Select or drop a scanned PDF (or one with some scanned pages).

2

Pick the language

Tell the OCR engine which language the document is written in.

3

Download

Get a searchable PDF with an invisible text layer, or plain text.

About the OCR PDF tool

OCR (optical character recognition) reads the text in scanned documents and photos of pages. WizBrand’s OCR PDF tool renders every page of your PDF at 300 DPI, recognises the words with the open-source Tesseract engine and adds an invisible text layer exactly over the original words. The result looks identical to your scan, but you can now search it with Ctrl+F, select and copy text, and let search tools index it.

Pages that already contain real text are detected and skipped automatically (tick “OCR all pages” to force them). You can also download everything that was recognised as a plain .txt file. Latin-script languages and Cyrillic get a searchable PDF; for scripts such as Hindi, Bengali, Arabic, Chinese or Japanese the tool extracts the text as a .txt file, because the invisible PDF text layer cannot reproduce those scripts reliably.

Recognition runs in your browser with WebAssembly. The first run downloads the OCR engine and the language data (a few megabytes, cached for next time); after that, your pages are processed locally on your own device.

100% private: your file never leaves your device — it is processed in your browser. No upload, no storage, no account.

Frequently asked questions

Is it free?
Yes — OCR PDF is completely free and unlimited. There is no account, sign-up, watermark or credit card required.
Are my files uploaded to your server?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your web browser using JavaScript, so your PDF never leaves your device. Nothing is uploaded, stored or seen by anyone.
How accurate is the OCR?
Clean scans at 200–300 DPI usually give very good results. Accuracy drops for blurry photos, handwriting, unusual fonts or very small text. Choosing the correct language makes a big difference.
Why is the first run slower?
The first time you use a language, your browser downloads the OCR engine and that language’s data (about 2–15 MB). They are cached, so later runs start much faster.
Which languages get a searchable PDF?
Languages written in Latin or Cyrillic script (English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Dutch, Indonesian, Turkish, Polish, Vietnamese, Russian, Ukrainian) get a searchable PDF. Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Gujarati, Punjabi, Arabic, Urdu, Chinese, Japanese and Korean are recognised and exported as text (.txt).
Does it change how my PDF looks?
No. The original pages are kept as they are; the recognised text is added as an invisible layer on top.
